Milo Cereal

I have a new craze that I recently discovered - Milo Cereal. I have never really eaten it until yesterday and the first bite made me fall in love. Yes that's a kitchen weighing scale in the background because I am currently on a strict diet and want to make sure that I don't overeat my allowed portions. My weightloss trick is really to control portion sizes and eat more frequently throughout the day. Eat everything, but in moderation.

So back to why I love this Milo Cereal - tastes just like milo and the best part of it all, the milk starts to taste like ice cold milo after soaking the cereal in it. It's like I can get the best of both worlds, the milo crunch and the milo drink together. Absolutely heavenly.

Calories aren't too bad either - 30g (1 portion of cereal) + 125ml of skim milk is only 160 calories in total. Great for breakfast and low calorie mid day snacks.

One pack that has about 6 portions goes for only $3.50 tops. ;)

Yes, this is my latest craze.

Broccoli Soup with Curried Yogurt Topping

Made this for dinner :)
Broccoli soup thickened naturally by puree-ing the broccoli florets. Yummy and guilt free indulgence.

Check out the recipe here.

Mei Goreng @ Mercure Hotel Batam

Ordered the Mee Goreng (spelt Mei Goreng on their menu) at the Grand Mercure Hotel Batam's Casaluna cafe for dinner. We decided to stay in the hotel for the evening as we were too lazy go cab up to Nagoya Hills mall which was supposedly 5 mins away and costs S$5 to get there. The Mee Goreng was actually pretty good. It cost us around (S$6 after conversion). Generous with toppings, sauce was sweet and savoury but not overwhelming. Pretty much a good dish to order there.

Jian Fei Guo - Diet Fruit

My friend saw this at a chinese medicinal hall and bought me a packet. To cook this fruit, you need to put 1-2 pieces in hot water and stir in some honey or sweetener. This fruit is supposed to help you lose weight but oh boy does it taste nasty.

I misinterpreted the instructions and actually cooked like 6 pieces of it in 2 cups of water without honey, then fed it to my mom, cause i was trying to help her lose weight too. The bitterness from the fruit was so overwhelming that it kind of traumatized her. I immediately went online to re-read the instructions then realise that you put only 1-2 pieces not 6-7. Sorry mom! Didn't mean it. :(

I'll definitely look into matching the fruit with natural sweeteners and perfect the taste, I'm sure the fruit will be able to help one lose weight from its natural properties, and not its taste.

Neo Group Lo Hei

Had a company dinner yesterday for Chinese New Year and we catered the Lo Hei from Neo Group catering (Neo Garden) on top of their Chinese New Year buffet set. The feedback that I got from my colleagues is that the Lo Hei ($48.80 for 10-15pax) was made up of pretty good quality ingredients and the salmon sashimi was fresh. They were very generous with the sauces and sesame seed so after tossing the chinese salad, everything was nicely coated. Good job. Looks like we will be ordering from them again next year!

Tonkichi @ Isetan Scotts, Shaw House

Tonkichi is one of my favourite places in Singapore to have tonkatsu (apart from Ma Maison). Tender pork with a crispy crust. Free flow of chopped cabbage. I like that the meats are tender and aren't overly greasy despite it being deep fried. They also have this mortar and pestle thing for you to grind toasted sesame seeds to make your own sauce. Super duper yummy.

I don't often take fried stuff these days due to my new diet, but if you want to feed me Tonkichi, I'll definitely save up my calories for them.

Paper Thosai from Sakunthala

Brought a friend to Little India for some late night Mustafa shopping and we went over to Sakunthala for dinner. Ordered paper thosai (above), prata, tandoori chicken and potato thosai. Yum yum. Though we preferred the Tandoori chicken at Ameen Makan Place, the food is relatively good. We spent about $37 for the food including a Mango smoothie. I was in love with the paper thosai. Carbs at 2am is a bad idea, but they tasted so lovely that I ignored my diet. I don't know what's wrong with me but I'm addicted to the thosai and gobbled most of it up. Prata was a-ok, could be better, but if you were to swing by this place, do try their thosais. Yum.

Egg and Kosong (empty) prata

Tandoori Chicken (Green sauce was pretty good)

Teng Yu Chee Cheong Fun Porridge @ Bukit Merah

Was looking for food and walked past this porridge stall in Bukit Merah, Alexandra village - Teng Yu Chee Cheong Fun Porridge. They were serving the dim sum style chee cheong fun that I absolutely love. I mean I am a fan of CCF but I would take the dim sum style anytime over the sweet sauce style

Ordered the prawn chee cheong fun and asked the auntie to put chilli only over one of the rolls as my friend doesn't take chilli. Very soft, QQ and yummy. The sesame seeds were nicely toasted and sauce wasn't too salty. Everything came together really well. No wonder I had to queue so long for it.

Have also taken a picture of their popular menu just in case if anyone is interested. All prices are in Singapore Dollars.

Truffle fries @ Skinny Pizza

And so I was saying that Skinny Pizza also has other food offerings apart from pizzas on their menu, one of them was the truffle fries (S$6). Ordered it yesterday alongside with my standard English Breakfast Pizza. When the fries came, I could smell the aroma from the Truffle oil. The fries tasted good when they were hot but once it cooled down, it wasn't as fragrant anymore.

I think truffle fries are an acquired taste. My dinner date was at first a little taken aback and commented that the fries smelled like they were doused in petrol but after he took his second bite, he concluded that the fries were pretty nice. I kinda still prefer the truffle fries from PS cafe though but they are both good :)

KLM Airline Meal - From SIN to DPS

Took a KLM flight from Singapore to Bali. Being a non-budget airline, they serve dinner on board. I was pretty impressed by the presentation as well as the taste of the food. Special note about their bread bun; soft, fragrant and pretty yummy. The hot dish was a curried chicken with lontong like rice. They served some kind of radish with ham and a chocolate cake for dessert. Yummy.

Pillsbury Buttermilk Biscuits

Zomg zomg, they actually have this in Singapore! The Pillsbury Grands! Buttermilk Biscuits. I almost squealed with delight when I discovered them at cold storage @ West Coast Plaza. My friend kept raving about them during my trip to the US. I didn't think much of them until one morning, while I was at a BNB in New Jersey, my host baked these biscuits for us. They smelled so heavenly, buttery fragrance that wafted into bedrooms and woke us up. When we bit into the biscuits (after slathering on jam and more butter), they literally melted in our mouths.

My friend loved it so much and wanted to buy some back to Shanghai. We actually walked through 5 supermarkets in NYC before we found them and she almost wiped out the entire shelf. That was how much she loved them. And wow, they actually brought it here to Singapore, I am impressed with Cold Storage.

Seems like it's gonna be my latest hangout place! ;)

Chawanmushi @ Sakae Teppanyaki

Visited Sakae Teppanyaki cause a friend had a craving for teppanyaki grill. I never knew that you could actually cook chawanmushi off a teppanyaki grill. We saw another group of patrons ordering it and decided to get one for ourselves too (S$3.99++). Basically the teppan cook (whatever you call him) plopped a slice of onion ring on the grill, poured in the chawanmushi mix and a couple of ingredients, then he poured some water and covered the entire thing with a metal dome shaped cover. After about 10 mins, the chawanmushi was done. He then served it on a plate. Very fancy but taste wise, could be improved. Just felt that it wasn't tasty enough and the chawanmushi portion seems a bit smaller than the average ones you get at the sakae sushi chains. Maybe it is an optical illusion but who knows? At least I can claim that I've tried it.

Hainanese Food @ Prince Coffee House Coronation Plaza

Used to hang out a lot at coronation plaza's Prince Cafe. They had this set lunch/dinner thing that went at $6 just for students. You get a soup, garlic bread and mains - pork chop, chicken cutlet, chicken chop, fish and chips ... Very good deal. I literally grew up eating Prince's food. This time round we have all graduated and decided to try their chinese fare. Good Hainanese fare! I was impressed, very tasty and old school. Hainanese pork chop is a must try.

Tandoori Chicken Sandwich @ Everything with Fries

Went to Everything With Fries @ Bugis Level 4 and tried their tandoori chicken sandwich. I'm having this Tandoori chicken craze now, just love the spices and indian flavour. So at Everything With Fries, you can choose the type of fries that you like - Curry, vinegar and salt, original, sour cream and onion and one more flavour that I can't recall for the life of me. I ordered the sour cream and onion fries while my friend did the original fries. We thought that the original fries would come plain it its original form but we were pleasantly surprised that it came with a house blend that tasted like a nice version of chicken in a biscuit (probably gonna get lambasted for making this comparison)

Tandoori chicken sandwich (S$11.90) was served between toasted bread and a special sauce drizzled over it. Nice, healthy and yummy, though I should have scrapped off that sauce (to reduce the fat) but I didn't. Came with a side of caear salad with a tad too much dressing though. All in all, it was pretty good food at pocket friendly prices and a nice place to have a gathering with friends.

Truffle fries at PS cafe

I've an addiction to Truffle fries. I would always order a plate from PS cafe whenever I go there. They  cost S$15 at this cafe for a huge plate of fries. It's good to share with 3-4 friends. I love my fries and I like to nibble the small pieces. They are usually crispier and also it's like I trick my mind into thinking that I'm eating a lot of fries but it actually isn't so much because the pieces are small. Kinda like one of my weight loss hacks. My friend suggested breaking up the fries into 3-4 pieces for me to pick on. Well not sure if it's going to work because the broken off sides wouldn't be as crispy...

Homemade Fruit Salad

Just thought of sharing one of my healthy weight loss snack tips. Sometimes it's really boring to eat an apple by itself or a cantaloupe in slices, so what I like to do is to actually slice up a few pieces of different types of fruit and mix them together, it becomes more palatable and interesting.

I notice that I get filled up more easily from snacking this way. One of my favourite combinations - Red dragonfruit, cantaloupe and kiwi.

NIHON MURA IZAKAYA @ downtown east

Had a Japanese craving and we went to Nihon Mura Izakaya @ downtown east. Decided to order sashimi and sushi from their buffet menu. I was quite impressed by the serving size but freshness of the sashimi have some room for improvement. Liked the shrimps and salmon. Maguro was not too good. Not sure why but I haven't really had good sashimi grade tuna in Singapore. Oh well.

And so we ordered that much sashimi in the picture for 2 people, craziness I know. (And that was on top of a lot more stuff that we ordered :/)

The meal cost us approximately S$31 per pax including tax for a weekday dinner.
