Wholemeal wraps from Gardenia

Saw this at cold storage - Wholemeal wraps from Gardenia that you can actually use as a wrap, serve with dips and become a pizza crust. I was so fascinated by it. I've been thinking long and hard about pizza crusts. I love pizza but I need to find a way to create a low fat, low calorie yet healthy version. I could probably make a pizza with very thin crust but it is going to be a lot of work and I might not be able to find the time to do so. This wholemeal wrap is definitely going to come into handy!

Can't wait :)

S&B Golden Curry Dinner

Cooked Japanese curry for dinner. Amongst all the instant kare (curry) mix that I've tried, I still like S&B the best. Flavourful, sweet, fragrant. Can't go wrong with this one. I think S&B stands for Spice and herB group. Interesting eh.

So I tried to be fancy and added some bonito flakes, peas and seaweed to make the dish more appetizing. Looks like my presentation skills have gained some XP!

Portuguese egg tarts from Koi Kei Bakery

Brother just came back from Macau and he bought 2 dozen egg tarts from my favourite tart bakery - Koi Kei Bakery. I love the portuguese egg tarts from there because they are very crispy on the outside but fragrant and not too sweet for the filling. I used to hate egg tarts because they taste so oddly eggy until I ate this egg tart when I was in Macau 2 years ago. I fell in love with them and never turned back.  These egg tarts are best eaten after warming up in the toaster oven. Avoid the microwave as the pastry will turn soggy.

Seafood Paella from Serenity Bar & Restaurant

I love a well made paella. These days I eat minimal carbs and if I have to consume those, I make sure that they are worth it. I don't have time to exercise as much as I should (I can almost hear people cough "excuses" under their breath haha) hence I make it up by monitoring my calorie count and carb intake. Something has to give. So anyway, I decided to try out the seafood paella at Serenity. It was tasty and seafood was not overcooked. Lovely spanish fare. Only grouse was that it was slightly pricey but I suppose it's bordering on fine dining so I should not be complaining.

Frog porridge @ Sinma Live Seafood Geylang

The last time I ate frog porridge was probably in 2008 at Chomp Chomp (Serangoon Gardens). The last time I ate frog porridge at Sinma was probably in 2003 before I flew over to the US for my internship. Still tastes as good as what I remembered from years ago. I like the gooey porridge thing where you can pour the sauce over it to eat it. Frog legs were very tender. I wouldn't say that frog legs taste like chicken, it's just an interesting chewy yet tender texture that I can't find in other meats. Hmm, maybe the thigh of the chicken? Like you know, muscles.

We spent about $37 including drinks for 2, a plate of vegetables and these 3 claypots of stuff. (Friend says it was 5 frogs but seriously I wasn't paying attention). Overall it tasted good enough for me to want to come back next time, but maybe not wait for years this time round ;)

Afternoon tea @ Foster's

Was craving for some english afternoon tea and I decided to drop by Foster's Cafe at Holland village. They have this Devonshire cream tea set ($11++) that comes with sweets, scones, sandwiches and tea. I love the quaintness of the cafe. Almost makes you feel like you're transported to a real european cafe.

Taste is alright, I'm not very picky, given that the tea set is really value for money and I get to chill out at a really nice place. Loved the scones although they were slightly dry. I didn't finish everything because there were just too much carbs in them but I'll definitely come back here again.

Pastry cases!

Went to a friend's place and he made this wonderful curry chicken, ricotta cheese filled pastry for us. I really loved the pastry case and asked him where he got it from. Pastry case was delightfully crisp and flavorful.  It was actually just some frozen unfilled pastry cases that you can bake at your own convenience. The brand is Jus-rol Vol-Au-Vent and they can be bought from Cold Storage Singapore. This definitely opens up a lot of possibilities for my recipe experiments.

Brunch @ Epicurious

I love brunches, they are a good way to drag me out of bed on Sunday mornings. I went to Epicurious for a lazy sunday brunch. It is recommended to reach slightly before 11am or the place will fill up really fast after that. I ordered the full monty set and it was really filling. Thank god I shared it with a friend (alongside with a side of pancakes - my other favourite). The full monty doesn't come with Spinach, you gotta add it on. I love my greens, don't you think the green spinach made the dish more colourful and appetizing? :P

Brunch was nice and hearty. I really liked how they used those traditional chinese cockerel plates to present the food. Nothing too fancy about the brunch, but it was nice chilling by the Singapore river and tucking into comfort food. I've checked out their lunch and dinner menus while I was there, look really interesting though, must find an opportunity to try them out next time.

Mixed fish platter from Ameen Makan House

Came back to Ameen makan house for supper today and decided to try their mixed fish platter ($15 for small in the picture above). I've been raving about their mixed chicken platter previously and have always wanted to try out the fish one. The fish platter takes about 20 minutes to grill, so do give them a call before you reach to preorder first if you do not want to wait that long.

That being said, my friends and I feel that the 20 minutes wait is well worth it. Fish was fragrant and succulent with all their juices intact. The marinade is the same as the chicken platter and oddly enough, all of us preferred the green coloured fish. There's something about it that draws us to it. This is an amazing dish and we will definitely come back for more. According to my fat conscious friend, he mentioned that the fish is actually pretty low fat and healthy so he recommends it to people who are on a diet to have this flavourful dish the next time they come.

Braised Duck from Giant Supermarket @ IMM

Duck from Giant Supermarket @ IMM. Never thought that a braised duck from a supermarket could taste this good. Braised duck was flavorfully marinated and meat was cooked just right. Not too tough and dry nor too oily. My dad actually asked me which famous stall did I get this from. Speaks a lot yeah? Well, this duck seems seasonal though, I don't see it there all the time. So if you get lucky and see Giant Supermarket offering this again, why not give it a taste test?

Homemade Pineapple Sorbet

Made pineapple sorbet today. Extremely healthy, low fat and yummy. One of my guilt-free indulgences.
